Marvelous Motor Oil: The Viscosity of Motor Oil |
|
This experiment, testing the viscosity of motor oil, was about finding the change of viscosity in three different grades of oil when heated or cooled down. The question of the experiment was: "when differnt grades of motor oil are heated up like the inside of a car engine, will their normal viscosities change?"
The hypothesies was: "even if motor oil is heated to high temperatures, all grades of motor oil will remain close to original viscosities."
Conducting the experiment was fairly easy, although messy. The main steps of getting the information necessary to calculate the viscosity were heating or cooling the oil and timing the descent of the metal ball in the oil. After calculating the average of all three balls dropped in each different type of oil, it was possible to calculate the approximate viscosity of each oil. That being done, the results were compared and an answer to the question and the hypothesis were determined.
