Juice for the Cure! "the lonliest fruit in the produce section could be a man's best friend" |
|
Despite the remarkable progress in the treatment of cancer over the past four decades, there is still ongoing research to find new drugs or to increase the effectiveness of the old ones. Surprisingly some useful natural compounds that could be potential contributors to the prevention or the treatment of cancer are under investigated. Phytochemicals are non-nutrient plant chemicals that contain protective, disease-preventing compounds. Today more than 900 phytochemicals have been discovered. Honored in legend and ignored by most shoppers pomegranates are native fruit from Iran that have been grown and used as natural remedy since ancient times. Pomegranates are rich in different phytochemicals such as Ellagic acid, Phenols and Flavonoids. Although the antioxidant properties of pomegranates have been investigated, not as much research has been put into exploring the anticancer properties of this fruit. This work presents an in vitro study on the anticancer activity of pomegranate juice on cancerous cells. Cytotoxicity of pomegranate juice was examined by investigating cell viability and proliferation using standard colorimetric MTT assay on mesothelioma cancer cell line. The results will be presented and discussed.
